Gateway to Heaven: Tianmen Cave in Zhangjiajie, China

By the time I reached the site, I had no much more energy.

All that was left of me was a powerful urge to eat anything that crosses my path. The huge rocky cave towering above me, the very reason I was in Tianmen mountain in the first place, appeared to me as a gargantuan donut. Thankfully, there were food stalls lining one edge of the traveler area. Otherwise, I would have eaten the cave too. I followed the scent of what smelled like fried eggs and longganisa (native Filipino sausages). Of course, there was no longganisa. but the Chinese version tasted very much like it. With six pieces of buns (siopao), they made up my first meal of the day. It was already past three in the afternoon.

Sausage and buns! These mini-sausages taste practically exactly like longganisa hamonado. To my delight!
Tianmen Cave is often referred to as Gateway to Heaven

After the quickest meal of my life, I finally had the chance to take a look at Tianmen Cave. The centerpiece of the Tianmen mountain national Park, it is a natural hole that cuts through one side of the peak. At 1520 meters above sea level, it is the highest natural arch in the world, earning its nickname “Gateway to Heaven.”

The cave alone is 131.5 meters tall, 57 meters wide, and 60 meters deep. but it wasn’t always like this. It used to be an ordinary cave. At the time, the site was called Songliang mountain until Year 263, when one face of the cliff collapsed and created a door-like opening. The name was then changed to Tianmen, implying sacred. Today, this gateway has become one of the most renowned structures in Hunan Province.

The hole is available through a 999-step staircase that climbs straight to the base of the hole. nine is one lucky number in numerous Chinese cultures. The road that leads to this place is Tongtian Avenue, a dangerously winding path that turns 99 times. In 1999, a stunt exhibition was staged, allowing planes to fly through the cave. It was a momentous event that was witnessed by 800 million people through a live telecast.

Tianmen Cave (Gateway to Heaven) as seen from the base of the mountain!
A waterfall cascades just next to the 999-step stairway to Tianmen Cave.
Me and the huge hole. Haha.
View of the big gate road from the end point, the Tianmen Cave
As I sat there, staring at the arch, I began wondering whether it would be a good idea to still climb to the lofty viewdeck. It would have been another beautiful climb: Not only are the stairs set just next to a gentle waterfall, they also face the city of Zhangjiajie, cradled at the foot of a mountain range. but the first sign of sunset loomed overhead. suggestion of the cliff bathed in orange light, reminding me of the time. The choice was quite apparent now. I needed to catch the 6:30pm train to Liuzhou.

Reluctantly, I grabbed my bag and headed to the bus terminal and made my way back to the city. had I had much more time, I would have stayed a lot longer. It was a shame that I saved Tianmen mountain for last.

Kuinka reppu Eurooppa vauvalla

Nomadic Matt: Esittele itsesi kaikille!

Mitä neuvoja rahan säästämiseen sinulla on muille?

Kuinka pysyit budjetissa matkustettaessa?

Nyt kun me have traveled with a 10-month-old we feel like any other travel we do will be quite relaxing!

What advice do you have for other couples with a young baby?
You can (and should) still pack light when you have an infant. We initially took two packs (one of which was a baby carrier) and a daypack. After only a couple of days in Amsterdam, however, we realized we had too much stuff and posted a box home so we could jettison the day bag! We operated on having one pack for both Paula’s and my gear, and a pack for all Cohen’s gear (including diapers, clothing, bedding, etc.).

I would recommend being more proactive about planning out accommodation in advance. I had romantic ideas of just winging things and arranging accommodation as we went.

In reality, it’s not a nice feeling when you have a baby to look after and you don’t know where you will be staying that night. It may feel adventurous as a single person who can crash in any dingy old hostel room, but it feels sickeningly irresponsible when you are traveling as a family!

This alone meant we spent too much time stressing in Internet cafés and not enough time enjoying the towns we were in.

It’s important when traveling with a young baby to try and preserve some of the routines as best you can. We intentionally introduced a particular bedtime teddy to Cohen in the months preceding our trip, so that Cohen would have a familiar toy when we traveled. We also tried to keep his bedtimes relatively consistent (as best we could) in all the places we stayed.

What was the hardest part about your trip?
Without a doubt the hardest part was not being able to experience the nightlife in the cities we visited. As I mentioned, we tried to keep Cohen’s routine as regular as possible…and this meant putting him to bed around 7:00 most nights. With Cohen in bed we couldn’t do much other than sit around in the hotel room, reading books and playing cards. This is another instance where Couchsurfing came in handy.

Although still house-bound in the evenings, we could still take in the culture by enjoying late evenings chatting with our hosts.

Helpoin?
As I’ve mentioned, having a baby in tow led to many easy openings into friendly exchanges with the locals. This meant we actually found it easier to engage with the culture than we would have without Cohen.

Having Cohen with us also had advantages when sometimes we were called to the front of the queue, and when dealing with customer services staff. people generally seemed more inclined to help when we were clearly a couple of lost tourists with a baby.

Do you have any parting advice?
If you’re traveling without children, make sure you enjoy the little things like being able to watch a whole, uninterrupted, movie on a long-haul flight, being able to eat meals at your own pace, without having to take turns watching the other person eat while keeping a child from throwing food everywhere. Or walking out of your chosen accommodation on a whim, without worrying you’ve forgotten something important like diapers or wipes.

Perhaps the best thing about traveling with an infant meant we got a fresh appreciation of the simple pleasures we took for granted as a young couple.

BATANES travel guide with sample schedule & budget

I didn’t like the idea of returning to Batanes. At least, not in the beginning.

It’s not because I did not delight in my previous trip. päinvastoin. Batanes has always been atop my list of dream Philippine destinations, and when I was finally able to set foot in it in 2014, it gave me much much more than I imagined. site after site, day after day, Batanes blew my mind and snatched my heart. ideal was a word I had never used to describe a journey, but that’s exactly what it was. It was perfect. I was scared that a second trip would destroy all my precious, flawless memories of it.

But it could not be helped. We were invited to a wedding there, and our old Batanes travel guide seriously needed some updating. With a unusual mixture of excitement and nervousness, we went back. In classic Batanes fashion, as soon as we landed, rain poured so hard, we could barely get a clear view of our surroundings. but in a matter of minutes, the sky cleared up and we saw that not much has changed. and in this case, that’s a good thing, a very good thing.

I’ve said this before: When the time comes that you have to leave Batanes, she will break your heart. and I left heartbroken the second time around.

UNDERSTANDING BATANES

Remote and isolated, Batanes is the northernmost province in the Philippines. It’s a 10-piece archipelago, with the three most significant islands being the only ones inhabited: Sabtang, Batan, and Itbayat. Sabtang and Itbayat are their own municipalities, while Batan is even more divided into Basco, Ivana, Uyugan, and Mahatao. Although it is the capital, Basco isn’t a city but a small town. It is also where the main airport is located and the most populated.

Sabtang, the largest island, is situated 45-minutes by boat from the town of Ivana, while Itbayat, in the extreme north, 3 hours from Basco.

For tourism purposes, the provinces is divided into four zones:

North Batan, which is essentially Basco.

South Batan, which covers the attractions in Uyugan, Mahatao, and Ivana

Sabtang Island, can be reached by boat. Day trip from Batan Island is possible, although an overnight stay is highly recommended.

Itbayat Island, can be reached by boat or plane.

Here are much more things you need to know about Batanes.

Language: Ivasayen (northern parts of Batan Island), Isamurongen (Sabtang and southern parts of Batan), and Itbayaten (Itbayat). Tagalog, Ilokano, and English are all widely understood and spoken.

Currency: Philippine Peso (PHP, ₱). PHP100 = USD 2, EUR 1.57, SGD 2.56 (as of February 2018).

Modes of payment: Cash. There’s also a Cebuana Lhuillier branch along Abad Street, where you can receive money, pay bills, or purchase travel insurance.

WHERE TO stay IN BATANES

As the capital and commercial center of the province, Basco is a good base for tourists. Inns and homestays are heavily concentrated in the poblacion area, which is also where the airport is located. trip operators also have their offices here.

The most affordable options are homestays. two popular homestays are Troy’s Lodge, where we stayed the first time, and Marfel’s Lodge, which is a favorite among travel bloggers. here are the details.

TROY’S LODGE
A loft with a few rooms for guests on the 2nd floor.
Rates: P700-P1000 per room (up to 3 pax)
Contact No.: +63 938 976 2237

HOW TO get TO BATANES

The fastest and easiest way to reach Batanes is by air. Basco has an airport (Basco Airport) located in the town proper. travel time is 70-110 minutes, depending on your choice of airline and departure.

Fares to Basco are infamous for being expensive. Year-round fares can cost much more than P10,000 per way if you book at the last minute. but there are ways to save more.

Fly buddy from Clark. buddy flights from Clark are considerably less expensive than from Manila. I did amock booking for April 2018 (April 24-28) and found these fares:

Book a Tuesday/Wednesday Flight. Manila/Clark-Basco flights scheduled on Tuesdays and Wednesdays are considerably lower than other days. While return flights (Basco-Clark/Manila) are less expensive on Fridays and Saturdays.

Watch out for SEAT SALES. promotion fares to Batanes are rare, but they exist. You just need to catch them when they’re up for grabs. Miten? Stalk Philippine Airlines. like them on Facebook. follow them on Twitter. Subscribe through email. This way, you’ll be the first to know when a big Basco sale is about to happen. Seat sales typically open at around midnight. (For much more information, read: how to book Piso Fares.)

How much did it cost me to fly to Batanes the first time? P1757, roundtrip. Yep! Ihan totta. I got it from a P288 base fare sale that amounted to P1757 with taxes and all.

Breakdown of my Manila-Basco Fare. P288 SALE.
Just last week, my pal Angel was able to score fares for Clark-Batanes for only P2500!

If you want to be notified when there’s a new BATANES SEAT SALE, download the Traveloka app and set up the price notifies feature. When the price of Batanes flights go down, you will get a notification on your phone so you won’t miss it. much more info here: Traveloka price Alerts

HOW TO get around BATANES

By Bicycle or Motorcycle

The bicycle is the most affordable way of going around the island, but make sure you have the stamina to match. The landscape is rugged and a bicycle ride can take you up and down the slopes of rolling hills a hundred times over. Not really a hundred, but you get the point.

Bicycle Rental Rates:

Old bikes: P25/hour

Small/Japanese bikes: P300/day

Mountain bikes: P600-P1000/day (depending on the type and how long you’re gonna use it).

For those who have a driver’s license and can drive two wheels, the motorcycle is a good option. Motorcycle lease costs P500-1000 per day. Gas is not yet included.

By Tricycle

For short distances, the tricycle is the most typical mode of transportation. here are the fares:

Within Basco town Proper: P30

From Basco town proper to outskirts: P50

You can also book a tricycle for a full-day tour. This is terrific if you’re a party of two or much more because you can split the costs. The good thing about this is that the chauffeur already know where to go or have bits of local info about the place. The rate is typically P200 per hour. given the time it takes to trip these zones, here are the estimated (and the usual) trike rates, good for two (2) persons:

North Batan: P1000

South Batan: P1500

Sabtang Island: P1000

Again, the rates above are good for 2.

Note that the rates for Sabtang island cover only the trip within the island. Not included are the boat ride and the tricycle transfers from Basco to Ivana port and back.

Our tricycle chauffeur was: Dale Veracruz, 0929 341 0941.

The faluwa that ferries passengers from Ivana to Sabtang, and the cogon-roofed tricycle.

By group Tour

Numerous travel agencies and hotels offer tours, but the one that we have personally tried on our many recent check out was Bisumi Tours, a duly-licensed local trip operator based in Basco.

Bisumi trips can personalize an schedule for you. You can even request to have it bundled with accommodations and airport transfers. but if you only need a guide and a way to get around conveniently, you can join one of their group tours.

Compared to just hiring a tricycle driver, Bisumi’s trips are pricier for a reason. These trips are led by trained local guides. While it’s true that some chauffeurs can serve as your guide, many of them can only share limited information about the sites you visit. If you want a better appreciation and deeper understanding of the places you visit, join a group trip instead. This way, you’re not just taking a look at random rolling hills, you’re also learning about their significance.

Below are the rates PER person (as of February 2018):

PLACES TO check out IN BATANES

Tourist spots in Batanes are typically divided into four zones: North Batan, South Batan, Sabtang, and Itbayat. I always recommend taking the North Batan trip first because it gives just the best dose of what’s to come, sort of a teaser. If you’re based in Basco, it is the closest and shortest of the tours. The whole thing takes just half a day, around 4 hours.

South Batan takes much longer, covers a larger area, and in my opinion, much much more breathtaking. If you do South Batan first, the North might leave you a bit underwhelmed.

Tärkeä! Please take note of the following tourism/environmental fees:

Batan Island (collected upon landing at Basco Airport): P350

Sabtang Island: P200

Itbayat Island: P100

More info per zone below.

North Batan

The North Batan trip takes only half a day (around 4 hours including the lunch stop). This is much more about visually spectacular landscapes and a little bit of history. There isn’t any stop here where you can swim or take a dip.

Below is the list of attractions in the northern half of Batan Island. For much more information about these sites, read: 10 amazing places in Batan Island North

Tukon Church

PAGASA weather Station

Dipnaysupuan Japanese Tunnel

Valugan Boulder Beach

Basco Lighthouse at Naidi Hills

Vayang Rolling Hills

Chadpidan Boulder Beach

The first stop is typically either Tukon Church or Valugan Beach. If you want to start early in the morning, check out Valugan beach first because it faces east — Valugan implies “east” — and is a terrific spot to view the sunrise.

On the other hand, if you’re exploring in the afternoon, you might want to request making Vayang Rolling Hills your last stop because it is a ideal place to see the sunset.

Chadpidan beach is also typically not included in trip itineraries, and might entail additional fees. However, you can have a good view of this boulder beach from Vayang Rolling Hills.

South Batan

Roaming the southern half of Batan Island takes an entire day. It straddles the municipalities of Mahatao, Ivana, and Uyugan.

Below are the traveler spots in many southern itineraries. For much more information about each site, read: 12 Must-Visit spots in Batan South

Chawa Viewdeck

Mahatao boat Shelter

San Carlos Borromeo Church

Tayid Lighthouse

Racuh-a-Payaman (Marlboro Country)

Alapad Pass

Motchong Viewpoint

San Jose El Obrero Church

House of Dakay

Spanish Bridge

Honesty Coffee Shop

Songsong Ruins

Imnajbu Beach

Maydangeb White Beach

Homoron Blue Lagoon

The sheer number of stops makes this an exhausting tour, but you won’t be complaining because this trip will leave you breathless. The first stop is typically Chawa Viewdeck. The picture-perfect Diura beach is also on this side of the island, but many trips don’t come close to it. However, you can have an unforgettable view of it from Racuh-a-Payaman.

There are two spots where you can swim — Homoron Blue Lagoon and Maydangeb White beach — so make sure to bring a towel, swimming attire, and extra clothes.

Sabtang Island

If you want to see much of the island, we suggest that you stay overnight. but if you have just enough time for a day tour, that’s fine too. below are the common stops.

If on a day trip, make sure you’re back at the port between 1pm and 2pm. better yet, before you leave Sabtang port ask the boatmen or tricycle chauffeur what time the boat is leaving the island for Batan and be sure to return by then. There’s only one trip per day so if you miss that boat, you’ll be forced to spend the night in Sabtang.

Soaking up Sarajevo: 5 Days in Bosnia’s War-Torn capital

The plane dipped below the dark clouds and a mountainous terrain revealed itself below us, blanketed in a dense fog. Dariece and I both peered out the window and to our surprise (and dismay) we saw a light skiff of snow painting the hilltops that surrounded Sarajevo.

The capital of Bosnia & Herzegovina was where we were going to spend the next 5 nights and we were thrilled to learn about the history, taste new food and experience a new culture.

Embarrassingly, only small fragments of what we discovered about the city stayed in our heads from our days in school. There was a war here we knew, but that was about it. We were about to be vividly shown just how tragic and triumphant the city’s history had been.

When we inspected into our house we were still shaking off the enjoyment and combating off hangovers from our time at the world tourism Forum in Istanbul. The modern, one bedroom flat with and LCD TV and a good view over the city only cost us around $30 / night. Mikä sopimus!

We dropped off our bags and headed out on the city. right away we were impressed at the old town of Sarajevo and it’s fascinating architecture.

Familiar Ottoman elements were visible around the east end of town, while the west showcased unique Bosnian / Austria-Hungary architecture. The symbolism of east meeting West at this war-torn crossroads was obvious.

East satisfies West in Sarajevo. This sign is on the main Pedestrian street in the Old Town.
Already we identified a few small craters in the sides of buildings and on the sidewalks. These red-painted holes were the markings of the tumultuous past that Dariece and I were vaguely aware of. We felt as though we weren’t giving Sarajevo and it’s people any justice without right away learning about what happened here.

We hopped on the number 3 tram and headed out towards the tunnel Museum. The name reminded us of the Củ Chi war Tunnels in Vietnam, and soon we would realize that the experience of trudging through the dark caverns was going to be an equally eerie and visceral experience.

The friendly tram driver told us exactly where to get off in seemingly ideal English. He directed us towards the taxis which charged us the proper price of 8 BAM to get to the museum. As we pulled up, we were slightly underwhelmed by the outside facade of the building.

It was just a house. A bullet hole ridden, shell-shocked house in the middle of some farm lands. It turns out that this house was where the take on and resiliant citizens of Sarajevo started to build an underground tunnel to bring supplies into the city while it was under siege from Serbian forces.

The Unassuming Facade of the tunnel museum outside of Sarajevo
For three years, the Serbian forces completely surrounded the city of Sarajevo and bombed it relentlessly, efficiently cutting it off from the outside world. The attacks started on April 5th 1992 and didn’t end until February 29th 1996, during which time fatalities totalled over 11,000 Bosnians and 2,400 Serbians.

The people of Sarajevo secretely built this 800 meter long tunnel by hand and used it to deliver goods, supplies, medicine and wounded citizens in and out of the city.

The fact that Sarajevans came out of this horrific war and are still the friendly, hospitable, kind people that they are today is amazing.

After walking through the cramped confines of the tunnel myself, listening to the audio guide and taking a look at the numerous pictures in the tunnel museum, I could in no way fully comprehend what happened here, but I could begin to try and understand it.

After leaving the museum, I looked at the people of Bosnia & Herzegovina in a different way. With respect and admiration, but also with a bit of shock. It impressed me to think that when I was talking to a Bosnian person my age, they had lived through this awful war.

Nick Explores The Tunnels of Sarajevo
When I was playing hockey and getting into fights with my parents over dumb shit, they were trying to survive over 330 blasts shelling their city every day. When I was complaining that there was no meat in my spaghetti, they were trying to survive off of military rations, cooked over open fires burning scavenged wood and old shoes.

When we got back to the city, we both looked at it differently as well. What a resilient place this should be. how can so numerous old buildings still stand after over 320,000 shells ricocheted off of their walls?

A Blast mark painted Red By Sarajevan People. These pertained to be known as Sarajevo Roses because of Their Shape.
The people still smiling. The sun now shining. Church bells and the Imam’s call to prayer all ringiKivikatujen läpi rauhassa ja harmoniassa.

Heillä on heidät melkein kaikissa alueen suurissa kaupungissa.

Pyhä sydämen katedraali

Loput päivät vietettiin vaeltamalla mukulakivikatuja katsomalla upeaa arkkitehtuuria ja odottaen asunnomme sadetta. Täältä sateet alkoivat matkoillamme ja he eivät vieläkään ole jättäneet meitä tänään.

Käytimme huonoa säätä tekosyynä saadaksemme kiinni työstä ja katsomaan joitain Game of Thronesia (olimme matkalla paikkaan, jossa se on kuvattu).

Meillä on aikamme Istanbulissa ja Sarajevon historiassa ja viidentenä päivänä kaupungissa katsomme ja suuntasimme Split, Kroatiaa, jossa vuokrasimme talon 2 viikkoa.

Pysy kuulolla lisää…

Sarajevon ehdotukset ja neuvoja

Tunnelimuseo:

Morica Han on viihtyisä paikka, jolla on suuri tavanomainen bosnialainen keittiö.

Zeljo on yksi kaupungin suosituimmista pikaruokapaikoista.

Things To See around Town:

Ensinnäkin, sinun on selvitettävä, mistä olet intohimoinen. Nautitko puutarhanhoidosta? Olla vanhempi? Ruoanlaitto?

Jokaisella verkkosivustolla on oma budjetti kirjoittajille, esimerkiksi: Vuohet tien budjetissa on 0 dollaria.

Pidän erityisesti äskettäisestä artikkelista “Matkani Something to Somethingstan”.

Minulla on paljon enemmän ideoita!

Kiitos ajastasi ja harkinnastasi.

Lämpimät terveiset,

Sinun nimesi

Toinen vaihtoehto on lähettää koko artikkelin kopio, mutta jos menet tällä reitillä, sinun pitäisi olla täydellinen luottamus lähettämäsi henkilöön, koska he voivat helposti julkaista sen hyvittämättä sinua ollenkaan. Lisäksi, jos päätät lähettää kokonaisia artikkeleita, varmista, että et lähetä artikkelia useille sivuston omistajille, koska jos kaksi ihmistä hyväksyyit, you’ll have to turn one of them down.

Duplicate content Is A No-No!
Google and other search engines penalize bloggers and webmasters if they publish duplicate content. That means that whatever articles you publish online must be completely original and can’t be published anywhere else on the web.

Know Thy Audience

Whenever you pitch an article to a website, you should first know the site’s audience. A lot of sites that are willing to pay for articles will be looking for pieces with a journalistic approach (ie: less “I’s” more “you’s”). These types of articles tend to be more difficult to write and the editors for such sites are typically more choosy about who they hire for the posts.

Not all sites are looking for journalists however, especially in the travel field. You may find quite a few paying sites that are looking for first hand accounts of amazing travel stories. This is where the everyday traveller can really make some money from their writing. try writing the pieces in a way that will appeal to a broad audience and you should be able to find someone who will pay you for it!

No matter how you write, make sure you match your writing style to the site you are pitching. read some of their most popular posts and try to get a feel for what kind of posts the site is looking for. are there a lot of lists (ie: 10 ways To Make money Freelancing)? are there news stories, travel tales, interviews? If you try to pitch an article with the same tone as others already published, you’ll have a much better chance of getting the job.

Article Ideas

If you’re a traveller, you’ll probably have a ton of stories and ideas about travel, but we all hit a brick wall sometimes and just can’t think about what to write. here are some terrific ways to think of new posts when you’re having a bad case of blogger’s block.

• travel stories – These will probably be your “go-to” posts. write about a recent travel experience and pitch it to your favourite site. (i.e: “Horse Trekking High In The Mountains Of Kyrgyzstan” & “One Steppe Ahead: Trekking into The unknown Mongolia“).

• Lists – probably the most popular style of article in travel writing today, lists are terrific attention grabbers. (i.e. “5 countries You never thought You’d Visit… until Now!” & “10 Must-Try meals From around The Globe“)

• Reviews – In the travel field, reviews are a very popular type of post and they can get a lot of search engine traffic. review your backpack, your laptop or a hotel! (i.e. “Dariece’s backpack – Osprey Kestrel 32 Review” & “Accommodation spotlight – Victoria house Belize“)

• Instructional – How To’s, Guides and Tutorials. Instructional posts should be helpful, interesting and comprehensive. (i.e: “Guide To Backpacking Thailand” & “How To find The perfect house sitting Job“)• Informational – how do you think Wikipedia became so popular? almost all web traffic starts from the user searching for information.• interviews – Interviews are a terrific way to connect with your favourite bloggers, and use their audience to boost the social presence of your writing. • Rant – Travelling usually comes with a lot of passion. You might hate or love certain aspects of the lifestyle. Rant about it. get controversial and you’ll probably get a lot of attention. OLE VARUILLASI! These types of posts typically attract a lot of negative comments, so make sure you have thick skin!• Inspirational – If you’re writing about how much you hate something in a rant, then you can also write about how much you love something. inspirational posts are terrific for travel writing and they help give people new ideas. For more terrific article ideas, check out pro Blogger’s “20 types of blog Posts: battling Writer’s Block“.

Titles, Titles, Titles!

When you’re pitching your article to perspective publishers, make sure that you have a catchy title. It is said that 80% of all web users click on an article based on the title alone. That means that once you’ve written a catchy title, you’ve already made 80 cents on every dollar the post is worth!

Blog or No Blog

Bloggers will definitely have a bit of an advantage when it comes to freelancing. Not only do they have an onliNE -portfolio, mutta on suurempi mahdollisuus, että he ovat kirjoittaneet teollisuuden tunnettuja nimiä.

Lopulliset ajatukset

Useimmat matkustajat pitävät nykyään jonkinlaista ennätystä matkastaan. Olipa kyseessä blogi, päiväkirja, sähköpostitse perheen kotiin tai vain muistiinpanot muistiinpanossa, me kaikki haluamme kirjoittaa matkailumme.

SENTOSA SINGAPORE: ending up being a youngster once again at Asia’s preferred Playground

Quarter-life crisis. I assumption it’s starting to kick in. practically every night because my 25th birthday I would just lie in my bed at night as well as believe about my childhood. When I close my eyes, I try to relive the days when I would just spread my arms broad open as well as pretend to fly. I try to keep in mind the day when I very first rode a bicycle. I try to envision climbing a close-by hill just so I might see the beach as well as feel the wind on my face. numerous times I would even dream about it. Unfortunately, unless time travel becomes a reality, all I can do is remember.

Woot! Sentosa!
Sentosa Merlion
I have always thought about Singapore to be a extremely contemporary as well as futuristic city. I had never been to any type of location in Singapore where I might not see or hear a close-by construction. advancement is unrelenting. however it is in this city where I had an chance to relive my lost childhood.

It was Day 4 of our Singapore-Malaysia cruise. Our cruise ship, the Superstar Virgo, docked in Singapore that morning. It wasn’t long up until we discovered ourselves stepping on Singapore soil again. It was unfortunate to quote goodbye to the ship however we were optimistic that there were still so much in store for us on the last day of this four-day trip.

Our trip bus chauffeur was already waiting on us when we emerged from the Harbourfront Centre. In no time, we were crossing over to Sentosa Island.

Tastes of Asia

Our very first stop was a restaurant called tastes of Asia. Perfect, I thought. I was truly starving that time as well as I my stomach was making strange seems already. We shared the table with the hospitable women running the island. They were extremely accommodating as well as I liked exactly how curious as well as excited they were about the blogging as well as social network culture in the Philippines.

A few minutes later as well as samosas, appetizers, were served. The primary program was a option between spaghetti, Hainanese chicken, as well as laksa. I purchased Hainanese poultry since I was truly hungry as well as there was a hole in my tummy that only rice might fill that time. I liked exactly how tender the poultry was. So far, I had not tasted any type of Hainanese poultry in Singapore that did not deliver.

Laksa.
My blogging partner was kind sufficient to provide me some laksa since the serving was quite huge. IT WAS PHENOMENAL. I loved, loved, liked it. I started kicking myself in the rear from that moment. I ought to have purchased laksa.

GoGreen Segway Eco Adventure

After lunch, we headed directly to Segway Eco Adventure, which provides a trip on one of their personal mobile transporters. visitors may utilize these transporters to check out Palawan as well as Siloso beaches. however because we were all beginners, we stayed within the confines of what appeared like a training ground. In fact, there was a short tutorial before we were enabled to utilize them on our own.

Finally trying the mobile transporters!
While I was using my helmet, I was reminded of exactly how terrified I was when I was still discovering to trip a bike, exactly how embarrassing it was to autumn as well as hit the ground, exactly how aggravating it was to autumn once again as well as again, as well as exactly how satisfying it was to lastly discover exactly how to manage it. thankfully for me, whatever went smoothly.

The Luge as well as Skyride

After a short affair with Segway, it was time to autumn in like with the beautiful shoreline of Singapore from afar. We boarded the Skyride as well as it was truly unforgettable. I felt like an thrilled young child as we were taken to the top of the hill while drowning in the amazing view.

Skyride!

Although we did not try the Luge, I was satisfied with just viewing other tourists have fun as they slide down the 650+ meters of the Dragon path or Jungle Trail. It was like viewing your playmates. funny exactly how other visitors on the ground would wave at us as well as we would wave back at them.

Sentosa 4D Magix as well as Sentosa Cine Blast

I like viewing in 3D theaters (or 4D, for that matter). I delighted in Mickey’s Philharmonic at Disneyland Hong Kong as well as the Shrek 4D experience at universal Studios Singapore, so I was truly expecting to be entertained at the Sentosa 4D Magix although there was quite a queue. One thing that made it a refreshing experience for me was that the film was notan animation however online action. It was a fun experience.

Sentosa Cine Blast as well as 4D Magix
Cine Blast, on the other hand, takes visitors to an interesting 4D motion-simulated ride. integrating HD projection with a “rollercoaster” ride, the Cine Blast features a online trip with mountains as well as valleys as well as wild rivers!

Tiger sky Tower

Standing 110-meters tall, the Tiger sky Tower is the tallest observation tower in Singapore. The trip takes you 131 meters above sea level, providing you a amazing panoramic views of Sentosa as well as Singapore. If you’re lucky as well as the sky is as remove as glass, you ought to likewise be able to see some islands of Malaysia as well as Indonesia.

Siloso beach as well as islets as saw from the Tiger sky Tower
These are just a few of the attractions in Sentosa. There are a great deal more. I was especially eyeing iFly: indoor Skydiving however we ran short of time.

iFly: indoor Skydiving
I liked Sentosa as well as exactly how it bombarded me with youth memories. Something tells me I ought to fly back to Singapore one of these days.

10 things TO SEE and do in LEÓN, NICARAGUA

Updated: 12/18/20 | December 18th, 2020

León was one of the highlights of my trip to Nicaragua. filled with history, delicious food, lots of outdoor activities, volcanoes, and nearby beaches, there was much more to do here than I thought.

The city is named after León, Spain. After Nicaragua was given independence from Spain in the 1800s, the elites of León and Granada struggled over which city would become the capital (eventually Managua was picked).

During the struggles between the Sandinistas and Somozas in the 20th century, the city changed hands numerous times between the two and was a scene of constant and intense combating (you can still see bullet marks on some buildings). This lasted all the way through the 1980s (which saw us involvement in the Iran-Contra affair) until peace was finally established.

Now, León is a stable university town with a growing food scene, lots of markets, growing (but not overwhelming) tourism, and much more colonial churches and cathedrals per capita than any other place in Nicaragua. I spent four days here hiking, eating, overdosing on churches, and sweltering in the heat.

Located in northwest Nicaragua, León is a college town typically overlooked by tourists who stick to places like Granada, Ometepe, and the beaches.

When I visited, I expected a lot of tourists. After all, there is a lot to see and do in León. instead I found mostly empty hostels and few gringos wandering the streets during my check out — which made it all the much more enjoyable!

I love the city and found a lot to do here. There’s no shortage of ways to spend a couple of days here as you travel around Nicaragua. Here’s a list of my favorite things to do in León:

1. Take a totally free walking Tour

Whenever I check out a new city I kick things off with a walking tour. They’re the best way to get a feel for the city, see the main sights, and get an introduction to the history and culture. Plus, you’ll be able to ask a local any and all questions that you have.

The original totally free walking trip is your best choice for here. They give you a good summary of the city and its history. (Just make sure to suggestion your guide at the end!)

2. check out the museum of the Revolution

This museum in the old mayor’s residence is dedicated to the Sandinistas and their fight against the country’s oppressive program It’s only two rooms, but you’ll get your own personal guide who discusses the history of the movement (in Spanish or English) and will take you up to the roofing system for good photos of León. The trips may be short, but it was my favorite activity in the city as you’re talking to a local and getting a comprehensive history filled with local perspective and context. many of the guides are former soldiers too.

Parque Central. open daily from 9am-6pm. Admission is $3 USD.

3. check out the Churches

There are a lot of churches in Léon. It has much more churches per capita than any other place in Nicaragua. I spent an entire day going to these monuments to God and marveling at their varying levels of detail. even if you’re not a religious person (I’m not), you can still appreciate the beauty, architecture, and history of these buildings. My favorites were:

Iglesia El Calvario – A neoclassical and baroque church dating back to the 18th century.

Iglesia La Recolección – built in 1786, this is considered the city’s many stunning church.

Iglesia de San Juan Bautista de Subtiava – originally built in the 1500s, this is the oldest church in Léon.

4. take in the Art

There is a big art scene in the city, and a number of galleries are available to enjoy. My favorite was the Museo de Arte Fundación Ortiz-Gurdián, which is also the biggest. Housed in two buildings, it features a collection of old religious art as well as modern Nicaraguan artists. There are early pre-Columbian works, Spanish colonial religious artifacts, as well as modern and contemporary pieces.

It takes a few hours to explore, and both buildings have beautiful courtyard gardens to unwind in. My favorite painting was El Retiro by Mauricio Gomez Jaramillo.

Av 3 Pte, +505 2311 7222, fundacionortizgurdian.org. open Tuesday-Sunday from 10am-4pm Admission is $3 USD.

5. Hit the Beach

A short bus ride from the city, you’ll find stunning beaches, warm water, and people in the surf. The surf isn’t as pleasurable as in the southern part of the country (I’m told it’s a bit rough here), but if you’re wanting to unwind and amazing off in the dry heat of the region, these beaches check all the best boxes.

Playa Poneloya and Las Peñitas are the most popular beaches. Both are just a 20-minute bus ride from the city center as well.

6. Go Volcano Boarding

Throughout the country, I saw people wearing the popular “I went volcano boarding” shirt, and this activity is what draws many backpackers here. After all, who wouldn’t want to slide down an active volcano on a piece of wood?(Not me. I skipped this activity. The hike? Sure. Going down on a plank of wood? No thanks.)

Trips leave multiple times per day and last a few hours (Cerro Negro, the volcano, is just an hour from the city). Bigfoot trips is the most popular trip operator.

Prices start around $30 USD per person.

7. wander the Market

León is a market town and its well-known enormous central market located near the cathedral is hectic, fun, and interesting. You can find everything there: grocers, street food vendors, toys, kitschy souvenirs, and everything in between. Moreover, you’ll find delicious soups, BBQ meat sticks, and other local fares. Stop by to browse, eat, and take in the local pace of life.

8. check out “Old” León

The ruins of León Viejo date back to the 16th century and are a short trip from León. The site is Nicaragua’s only UNESCO world Heritage noting and is one of the oldest Spanish colonial settlements in the Americas. While this isn’t some luxurious destroy site, it’s really the only place to see and learn about the country’s founding colonial past. The ruins of León Viejo were discovered in 1967 and excavations began the following year. even if you’re not a history buff like me, it’s still worth a visit!

León Viejo, +505 2222 2722. open daily from 9am-5pm (4pm on weekends). Admission is $5 USD.

9. El Fortín de Acosasco

Built in 1889, the fort was used to safeguard the region from attacks by the coast. It fell into disuse from 1930-1960 before becoming a hub for torture and secret executions under dictator Anastasio Somoza Debayle. When the Sandinistas retook the area, forces faithful to the dictator fell back here before retreating further.

Today, you can check out the fort and experience the uneasy stillness that haunts the hilltop. You can wander the various torture chambers and see just how brutal the conditions would have been when the facility was in use. It’s a grim but eye-opening place to visit.

Take a taxi from the city and check out with others as it’s a long walk and muggings have been known to happen when hikers check out alone.

10. Hike Some Volcanoes

One of the main reasons why people come here is to hike the nearby volcanoes, as León is near the country’s volcanic range, numerous of which are still active. You’ll be able to choose between easy half-day hikes and much more intense full 12-hour day hikes. the most popular hikes are:

Cerro Negro (1-2 hours; popular for volcano boarding)

Telica (a moderate 7-9 hours)

San Cristóbal (11 hours; the longest and hardest)

Momotombo (the second-hardest hike; 6-9 hours)

Expect to pay around $60-80 USD for a guided hike.

***
What I loved about León was its close proximity to so numerous outdoor markets, low-cost food, and good foodie restaurants. It felt a lot much more “local” than the traveler meccas of Granada and Ometepe down south. My check out there was one of the highlights of my trip to Nicaragua and I highly recommend you make it a point of going to here too!
